castillo de san josé
international museum of contemporary art
The fortress overlooking the harbour of Arrecife was built in 1799
on the orders of King Carlos III, to protect the coastline from pirate attacks
and
to provide work to the islanders in a time of great deprivation. In 1974 the
interior was reformed to house a prestigious collection of contemporary art,
including works by Manrique and Miró. Stairwells from the gallery lead
down to the restaurant from where panoramic views of the harbour can be enjoyed.
