los jameos del agua jameos - water grotto
The grotto is a further segment of the volcanic tunnel running from Mount Corona to the Atlantic sea. Beneath its vaulted roof, in the tranquillity of the lagoon resides a tiny, albino, nearly blind crab. Normally found on the seabed at 2000m, it has adapted to life in this tidal lake. Beyond the cave, a lush garden surrounds an ornamental pool and leads into a separate volcanic cavern designed as a concert auditorium. Walking up through the gardens to the upper level you have a view of the lava flow to the sea and can find the ‘Casa de los Volcanes’. This is an important centre of volcanology, with exhibits and information panels on the geological evolution of the island.
