“I was determined
to bring the beauty of Lanzarote to the attention of
the whole world” CM
César Manrique was born in Arrecife on
April 24th, 1919. He began painting very young, and his
abilities to absorb nature drew him towards art and the
environment. He moved from studying architecture in Tenerife,
to enter the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid
in 1945. After graduation he co-founded the Fernando
Fé gallery in 1953. He returned to Lanzarote,
after 4 successful years in America, in 1968 embarking
on a mission to bring the island’s beauty to the
attention of the world. He built various tourist centres
with “a new form of artistic impression”,
a symbiotic relationship between nature and man.
