el jardin de cactus
- the cactus garden
In an old, abandoned quarry, César Manrique
created his last project. The amphitheatre of cactus
beds contain over 1,400 species of cacti and succulents.
The gardens are overlooked by an old, restored windmill,
used for grinding maize into the islands traditional
food supplement called gofio. The gardens blend well
into the surrounding area of Guatiza and its several
hundred acres of “tunera” cactus. On these
cacti the cochineal beetle lives and is collected for
its dye which was once an important export item.
