folklore
Canary Islanders, as far back as the Guanches, were known as a people who loved to sing and dance. The steps to their dances, from the earliest ´Canario´ published in France in 1588, have travelled Europe and South America, and are mentioned in several written works, including Shakespeare. Wearing their colourful costumes, groups are to be seen at every fiesta, accompanied by Canarian music.

The distinctive sound of the timple, a 4 stringed, ukelele-type instrument known as the “sound of the Canary Islands” is joined by the guitar, ‘lute’, flute, gourds and tambour to complete the instrumentation. The lyrics of the songs derive their origins from agriculture and the sea, from which the local people prospered.
