Besides drought and natural devastation, migration was encouraged to populate territories in The Americas under Spanish rule. Canarians travelled to Venezuela, Santiago, Texas and Louisiana, but by the 19th Century the most popular destination was Cuba. There is a continued relationship today with the ancestors of the islanders who were led by the mayor of Teguise to San Antonio, Texas in 1730.
