On Mount Guanapay, overlooking Teguise, stands the Santa Barbara castle. Built in the 16th Century on the orders of Phillip II by Sancho de Herrera, it provided a lookout over the surrounding coastline. It suffered under several pirate invasions, which are described in panels along the walls of the chapel on the rooftop. The inhabitants of Teguise were forced to flee to the castle on several occasions.

Today the inside has been beautifully converted and contains documentation of the emigration of Lanzaroteans from the 17th Century onwards towards America, housing the ships travel certificates, family photos and memorabilia.
